Episode #12 – Cory Warren: Fuel For Families with The Lean Green Dad
Listen here or on iTunes.
“If you’re not able to paint the picture of how a brand will be helped by working with you, then you’re dead in the water. You gotta do something for the big brands first, for free. And when you do it, make it awesome. Make it amazing!”
CORY WARREN
I love flow. Not just that state when you are so into whatever your work that time seems to soften up around you, but also when events flow your way. Like when I put a name on my list of people I want to interview on the show, and then a few weeks later, that person contacts me first.
That’s what happened with Cory, the creator of Lean Green Dad. I’ve been following his podcast for a while, because it’s way more than just about parenting. Just a few weeks ago, for instance, his guest on the podcast was Joh LaJounie, a former obese hunter-turned vegan ultra-runner (Cory himself is a triathlete), sharing how he deals with this fond memories of hunting. See why I find it interesting? Not to mention that he is an incredibly profilic content creator who really knows how to keep things real and engaging. So Cory’s name was on my guest wishlist for a while – and then one day he was in my inbox as well!
Since I only have second-hand experience with parenting, the main idea of this interview was to talk with Cory about his experience building an online personality/lifestyle brand in a niche that may be smaller, but as it turns out, smaller can often mean more engaged. I also knew I wanted to find out more about the cease-and-desist letter he received when his site and podcast were already well established (he actually managed to rebrand and migrate everything in a ridiculously short amount of time).
In his other life, Cory is a sponsorship activation specialist, meaning he knows the ins and outs of connecting with bigger brands from the standpoint of a small(ish) blogger, and if you check some of the brands supporting him, you’ll see exactly what I mean. For me, the real gold of this episode is in his step-by-step explanation of how to approach and start a relationship with potential sponsors. So having kids is not a requisite for getting tremendous value out of this interview.
…although if you do have some, I’d love to know what you think of his ‘definition’ of parenting. I thought it was the best I ever heard.
